2Simplicity Ellis Cherry Clothing Organizer Dresser Poor Quality Control and PackingSep 17, 2007
Ellis Cherry Clothing Organizer By Simplicity For Children
After purchasing the Simplicity Ellis Cherry crib which EXCEEDED my expectations and receives 5 out of 5 I assumed I would have a similar experience with the matching 3 drawer organizer, boy was that presumptuous. I was very surprised to find that was not the case from the first site of the organizers cheap recycled cardboard box. The crib came in an attractive and appealing full color label box, the dresser was packed completely different simple 2 color box and didn't appear to be from the same product line. After checking for the country of origin I learned the dresser was actually made in Vietnam which is different than the crib which was made in China. I was immediately on alert and carefully began unpacking the pieces. Sure enough one of the main pieces, the center leg panel upright support was cracked in the back. Disappointed I continued to unpack the pieces and came to the bottom shelf which was cracked too. The factory attempted to correct the issue by stapling the crack together but it looked horrible, especially with the cherry finish compromised. In addition, the set of approx 8 long bolts were completely rusty, I can only assume from their long journey in a shipping container on the open ocean from Vietnam, strangely, none of the other metal hardware had this problem. Since I needed to assemble this thing right away for an upcoming baby shower I did not have the time to contact Simplicity for replacement wood panels and rust free hardware so I proceeded to Target to try and exchange the broken pieces for good ones. After spending about an hour with the Target employees trying to find another dresser in the back and then looting through the box for the parts I was on my way. Once I started building the dresser I actually felt like it may be OK. Well that's the funny thing which leads me to comment on the instructions; you spend the first 8 or 9 steps diligently assembling the left, right and center main support leg panels to the top. As soon as you feel you are making progress the instructions 9 through 14 or so are spent having to disassemble all the same pieces in order to install the back panels, bottom shelf and the cross members. I'm not joking; you have to take it all back apart. These directions are a joke and I don't think anyone at Simplicity US or Target Quality Control checked them. The directions should tell you to build from left to right, or right to left, not from the outside in which requires to you take everything back apart. Not to mention having to push and manipulate the panels together so the factory drilled holes would line up with each other. Now on to the drawers, what a joke, all of the plywood pieces were warped and had to be forced together to line up the screw holes. I added wood glue to the screwed seems because I didn't trust the integrity after having to force the warped pieces together. The drawer bottoms and back panel are made with the worst looking simulated wood pattern hardboard I have ever seen. The drawer hardware is unbelievably cheap and doesn't roll smoothly and had to be greased which provided slight improvement. I assume greasing those drawers will come back to haunt me someday when I get grease on our children's clothes but I had to do it to get the drawers to role properly. Finally, don't be fooled into thinking this unit is made of solid wood. The factory puts in a great effort to disguise the particle board used to manufacture this product. Other than the wood stock used on the legs and the cheap plywood used on the interior panels of the drawers, from what I can tell this entire unit is particle board creatively disguised by a thin skin of real wood veneer with a simulated wood grain tattoo rolled beneath the cherry finish along the cross section to give it a real wood look. Yes, even the top and main upright panels appear to be particle board with a thin veneer and fake wood pattern rolled onto the cross section. For the price I would have expected a little more. I will say after quite a bit of frustration this thing did eventually go together and standing back a couple feet looks pretty good and you would have no idea the problems I had getting it to that point. The only reason I did not return this product is because it matches the crib. Otherwise I would not have put up with it and it would have been thrown in the "to-be-destroyed" pile at Target. I give it 2 stars because it does look and work OK once assembled but is quite an adventure along the way. I am very disappointing in Simplicity and Target for having no controls in place to catch this. It's worth $149.00 tops.
Good Luck
